Mitchell Starc secured his third five-wicket haul against South Africa in the third Test in Cape Town, following a thrilling and unpredictable opening day. Australia successfully dismissed the hosts. Late in the day, the second new ball was captured, and it proved to be the critical weapon. Starc’s full, swinging deliveries claimed four wickets in two overs, with the final four South African victims yielding only two runs.
Pat Cummins elected to bowl after winning the toss, as he perceived that the surface was sufficiently damp. Nevertheless, the pitch proved to be batter-friendly and hard as a result of an exceptionally dry winter. The tourists were compelled to pay the price for their decision with a dominant opening session, as South Africa’s openers capitalized on the situation immediately. Australia eventually recovered from a dominant start by enduring two consecutive collapses, resulting in a day that was characterized by a back-and-forth dynamic.
Four members of the Australian crew were replaced. Due to a neck injury, Steve Smith was unable to participate, while Scott Boland was left out. Nathan Lyon, Cooper Connolly, Josh Inglis, and Cam Green were incorporated into the starting lineup.
What was the progression of South Africa’s innings throughout the day?
Marques Ackermann immediately established the tone in his second Test. He had amassed the highest score by a South African batsman in an opening session, 82 not out, by lunchtime. Aiden Markram, his partner, was equally adept, demonstrating cuts and drives during the initial session.
He even forcibly pulled Cummins for a six off a ball that was eight overs old. Ackerman, who had been more cautious at the outset, was unrestrained after swiping fiercely at the opening ball and nearly clearing the boundary at backward point off Hazlewood after the drinks break.
Subsequently, he relentlessly pursued the spinner and struck Nathan Lyon for a six in the subsequent over, thereby concluding Lyon’s début spell after only four overs. The two players achieved South Africa’s first 100-run opening partnership in 42 innings as they leisurely strolled.
After hitting four consecutive fours against Starc, Ackerman hooked Cummins for an additional six. In the interim, Travis Head executed a catch off Markram’s bat. The initial session generated 140 iterations at a rate of 5.18.
Despite a brief episode of cramping, Ackerman was tripped off Lyon after stepping out and was defeated in flight after racing to 95 off 93 deliveries. David Bedingham joined Markram to continue the positive work. On 78, Markram pulled a short ball from Hazlewood to the backward square, where a diving Starc completed the catch. A Lyon delivery that drifted sufficiently to strike Temba Bavuma’s off-stump without turning was bowled four balls later.
When Beau Webster was benched and Cam Green was unable to bowl, Australia sought out Cooper Connolly for a change of pace. Matthew Breetzke’s innocent forward prod enabled Connolly to secure his first Test wicket on two occasions. A pad-first, bat-first uncertainty was resolved through replays.
After a fast morning, South Africa experienced an unstable afternoon as it slid from 158/0 to 216/4 and ultimately 232/6. As the day progressed, the occasional ball was kept low or clutched, and one of Connolly’s deliveries fell dead, nutmegging goalkeeper Alex Carey for four byes. It was no longer as effortless to visit the spinners.
Bedingham maintained his composure at one end and scored a composed fifty, in stark contrast to the frantic scoring rate of the morning. He confidently struck the quicks, but on fifty, he also fell victim to a short ball, sending a catch to deep backward square. Hazlewood executed an acrobatic boundary catch. Wiaan Mulder was an additional casualty of the short-ball strategy, as he was subsequently dismissed after a two-ball duck.
What was the method by which South Africa was eliminated by Starc and the second new ball?
Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen provided the hosts with some relief when they faced the old ball. In a fluid passage, Jansen violently drew Cummins for four and made consecutive square cutters off Hazlewood. Rickelton was the partnership’s gentler contributor; however, they were able to partially repair the afternoon’s damage.
The strategy underwent a complete transformation when Starc received the second fresh ball. Rather than employing the short-ball strategy that had previously been successful, Starc bowled full and swinging, resulting in the capture of four wickets in two overs.

Rickelton and Jansen were both subdued by the late movement, and neither Kagiso Rabada nor Glenton Coetzee had much to say. Starc concluded a day that had been characterized by a significant swing in both directions until Australia ultimately regained control by completing his third five-wicket haul against South Africa. The final four wickets were dismissed for a mere two runs.
