MS Dhoni, former Indian captain, has claimed that he will decide whether or not to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2027 Indian Premier League by December 2026. On October 24, 2026, the 45-year-old made the statement at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, capturing the attention of cricket fans worldwide.
Medical tests would be the deciding factor, according to MS Dhoni, who missed the entire 2026 IPL season owing to a calf injury and fitness difficulties.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan acknowledges that MS Dhoni has the last say. “Doc, I will have to go through the test.” You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see how strong I am to perhaps play another season,” MS Dhoni was reported as saying by Indian Express.
“And if I’m not, you’ll have to make sure you do everything correctly with me and that this old vintage vehicle is running smoothly on the road.” So all the pressure is on them,” he said.
Why is MS Dhoni’s availability in the 2027 Indian Premier League uncertain?
The main reason MS Dhoni’s IPL 2027 participation is uncertain is a fitness setback that stopped him from playing the entire 2026 season. His inability to play owing to a calf injury raised questions about his ability to cope with the physical demands of another IPL season at the age of 45. His words at the Bengaluru healthcare event demonstrated that he is serious about the matter and will make his decision on medical evaluations rather than feelings.
The greater context gives the query more weight. Dhoni played his final match for India in the World Cup quarterfinals in November 2019 and will retire from competitive cricket in 2020. Because of his retirement, CSK was permitted to retain him as an uncapped player until the 2025 IPL season. In the 2025 Indian Premier League, he batted toward the end of the order. However, he missed the entire 2026 season because CSK did not make the playoffs.
The Chennai Super Kings are the IPL’s equal most successful side, having won five trophies. MS Dhoni guided his team to triumphs in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Following the 2022 season, MS Dhoni momentarily relinquished his captaincy in the middle of the season before resuming it as CSK went through a difficult period that concluded in their first-ever failure to qualify for the playoffs. After winning the 2023 championship, he resigned once more, and Ruturaj Gaikwad took over as captain. Since then, CSK has failed to advance beyond the group stage.

After missing a whole season, Dhoni might make a comeback if he passes his medical exams and chooses to play in the 2027 Indian Premier League. Before December 2026, when Dhoni has set a deadline for his decision, the team and its fans will attentively observe any developments.
